SK telecom SK Telecom Opening Korea’s ICT Experience Center in Barcelona


On February 28, 2017, SK Telecom (CEO & President Park Jeong-Ho, announced that the company opened an ICT experience center ‘ Mobile’ for local children in Universe Plaza, located in Montjuic Park in Barcelona on February 27, 2017 (local time). It first opened during the MWC 2017. Mobile is a portable ICT experience center of which equipment and structure was shipped via air transportation from Korea to Barcelona, Spain.

This was constructed as a pyramid air dome style with 400 m2 (20mx20m) total area and 9m in height in front of the front door of Youth Mobile Festival (YOMO) exhibition center. YOMO is said to be MWC for children and youth.

YOMO is aiming experience education in the field of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM) in order to improve thinking ability that can converge different academic sectors. The exhibition center is composed of in accordance with this aim. Mobile, as an ICT experience center for science, technology, and art education, officially participated in YOMO by receiving an invitation from the MWC host, GSMA. Mobile is operating ‘IT-based Humanity Class’ and ‘Albert Coding Class’ for visitors’ in-depth ICT experience.

A group of 48 children at the age of 10 ~ 12 can take an educational tour for one hour.

SK Telecom prepared various programs such as coding educational program derived from soccer game and culture class using hologram. Such programs are angled toward local children in order to make them easily learn basic concepts while playing for fun.

The Albert Code Class is operated through the help of Spain’s No. 1 mobile operator Telefonica and IT-based Humanity Class is directly operated by SK Telecom by hiring local experts.

GSMA is expecting that almost 20,000 children from all over the world will visit ‘YOMO’ and ‘ Mobile’ during the MWC 2017.

Attendees to the Mobile opening ceremony were VIPs from home and abroad, including Choi Jae-Yoo, Vice Minister for Science, ICT and Future Planning, John Hoffman, CEO of GSMA Ltd., Jamie Angulo, Director of Telefonica’s Talentum School, and Park Jeong-Ho, CEO & President of SK Telecom, and local children and ‘Sprout Expedition’ from Bongdong Elementary School in Korea.

At the opening ceremony, Bongdong Elementary School and La Salle Bonanova exchanged ‘sprout badges’ which symbolizes the growth of friendship between two schools and their will to grow as talented people in the ICT field.   

Park Jeong-Ho, CEO & President of SK Telecom, said, “As a global ICT company, we will do the best to take our responsibility for narrowing information gap resulted from poverty and surroundings.

John Hoffman, CEO and Director of GSMA Ltd., said, “It is a pleasure to have Mobile here. It will make those students who visit YoMo dream to be a talented person in the field of STEAM.”
